August 2020: As Told by GIFs

Needless to say, a lot happened in August. Elections heating up, peak summer weather, NBA Finals, and a whole lot more. With so much going on in the world, here are the cultural moments from August that were seen and shared the most (via GIFs!).

Most-Viewed GIFs of August
Overall, these were the top-viewed GIFs uploaded in the month of August! This list shows that K-Pop group (G)I-DLE’s fans are clearly showing their support in GIF form. Same goes for a strong call to vote via Vote.org’s GIF (PS: remember to register to vote!) and the UFC fan base coming in strong. We also had a few GIPHY Studios Originals in the mix showing how people chose to send greetings and some self-love last month.

Tributes to Chadwick Boseman
In the last week of August, Chadwick Boseman’s passing issued a strong emotional response from fans and celebrities alike. This was reflected in the top searches, as many people paid tribute to the actor.

Shark Week
The most fin-tastic week of the summer returned once again, with Shark Week leading the GIPHY charts during it’s premiere week and netted a higher spike in views compared to last year.

In addition, reaction GIFs of this year’s guests (Shaquille O’Neal, Adam Devine, etc.) led the way in top-viewed GIFs from this year’s Shark Week.

Changing of the Seasons
Mother Nature was also influential this month, with the weather and other natural events being the cause of search spikes throughout August, including:

  • Spikes for “earthquake” when it hit North Carolina
  • Spikes for “hurricane,” “storm,” “windy,” etc. topping the charts the first week of August when Hurricane Isaias made landfall.
  • In the last week of August, we saw searches for “fall” and “autumn” start to increase, showing that — despite August very much still being summer— people are anticipating the arrival of fall with September on the horizon.

Kamala Harris Announced as Biden’s Running Mate
When Joe Biden announced Kamala Harris as his running mate there was an increase in searches for both, but most notably, a huge spike in searches for “Maya Rudolph clapping.” Clearly people are ready for SNL to take on the 2020 elections!

NBA Players Take a Stand
With the NBA Playoffs underway as well as the players taking a stand for important issues of social justice, the NBA continued to be front and center in terms of GIF searches. Some of their top-viewed GIFs of the month include:

Last but Not Least…Puppies
What would the internet be without adorable pets? On August 26 we saw a massive spike for “dog” and “puppy” searches in celebration of International Dog Day. Perhaps due to the rise in pet adoptions due to COVID, but this day also inspired many more dog-related searches compared to 2019.
