Editor’s Picks: Our Favorite GIFs and Clips From the 2021 Independent Spirit Awards

Our favorite season, awards season is in full swing, and on Thursday night, the Independent Spirit Awards celebrated the best in indie filmmaking with a virtual ceremony hosted by SNL’s Melissa Villaseñor.

As always, we captured all the GIFs and Clips from the ceremony live on the Film Spirit Awards’ official GIPHY channel, from this memorable appearance by Adam Sandler, to Chloe Zhao’s shoutout to the indie film community after her Best Director win for “Nomadland.”

We asked our editorial team to pick a few of their favorite moments from last night’s ceremony. Here’s what they chose.

Michaela Coel winning for Best Ensemble Cast in a New Scripted Series for “I May Destroy You.

“This is one of those moments where sound is key to the content because Coel’s words punctuate her movement with the statuette perfectly.”

Paul Raci winning for Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture for “The Sound of Metal.”

“This is a great sound bite of a popular phrase, and we love the ASL component! Every winner from ‘The Sound of Metal’ either signed like Raci or had an ASL translator! We are forever striving to make GIPHY more inclusive in every way, so content that contains sign language is something we’re really excited to promote!”

“Presenter Kumail Nanjiani summed up how everyone feels after a year of dealing with the coronavirus. COVID and quarantine content continues to be popular throughout the pandemic, so this relatable clip is a great addition to our library!”

“Carey Mulligan’s reaction after winning for Best Actress in a Motion Picture for “Promising Young Woman” is an instant classic GIF for ‘scared’/’anxious’/’afraid’ searches for years to come!”

“We are obsessed with this adorable GIF of everyone’s boyfriend, Steven Yeun, giving the camera an awkward wave.”

“This GIF of host Melissa Villaseñor is a great one to send anytime you need to get out of a conversation quickly!”
