GIPHY Arts commissions hundreds of artists a year, all of whom do impeccable work. Today, we are happy to spotlight GIPHY Artist Anna Firth and share a Q&A that dives deeper into the creative process.
Anna Firth (she/her) is a Bay area-based visual artist using traditional drawn animation methods to create GIFs and expanded cinema works. Her animations often crowd anthropomorphic stock characters into the video frame and weave the character's cartoonish bodies in infinitely looping scenes.
What came to mind when GIPHY Arts approached you for a commission?
I immediately thought of the characters I wanted to bring along for this project and what they would wear. From the start, I pictured an inseparable femme best friend duo who dress identically.
What is different about GIFs/Clips vs. other art mediums?
I’m obsessed with any looping media you can get a little lost in. There’s something creepy yet comforting about the endlessness of looping video. It’s also beautiful how a gif will feel like it’s been playing forever before you scroll into it and will feel like it will keep playing forever after.
What do you hope your audience takes away from your work?
I want people to have the space of the video to have a quiet, relaxing moment to let the feelings reshape their room for a few seconds. And then to be struck with the urge to pick up the phone and catch up with an old friend or run outside and see what phase the moon is in.
