GIPHY Arts Talk Shop: Handcrafted Stop Motion with Artist Brittany Bartley
GIPHY Arts commissions hundreds of artists a year, all of whom do impeccable work. Today, we are happy to spotlight GIPHY Artist Brittany Bartley and share a Q&A that dives deeper into the creative process.
Brittany Bartley is an artist and animator based out of Brooklyn, NY. Her work is playful, textural, and occasionally utilizes skills she picked up while employed as a decoupage artisan and juggling equipment fabricator. She enjoys biking, plants, and pattern clashing.
What came to mind when GIPHY Arts approached you for a commission?
I spend a lot of my free time experimenting with short animation so I jumped at the opportunity to work with GIPHY on a Clip. My mind then skipped ahead to the inevitable destruction of my studio which becomes completely covered in paint, clay, lighting gels, and who-knows-what-else as I’m in the thick of a project. But it’s worth it!
What is different about GIFs/Clips vs. other art mediums?
The looping aspect of GIFs can be quite playful and I often find it adds an extra layer of humor to my animations. Stop-motion can also be time consuming so while I tend to keep my animations brief I can at least devise a way for them to exist in an endless cycle rather than abruptly end after a few seconds.
What do you hope your audience takes away from your work?
Generally, I’d like my audience to be charmed. I very much enjoy the fabrication and set building process of my animations and hope some of that handmade warmth comes through.
