Zachary Aghaizu is an Artist based in London, UK who expresses their work through various creative media mixing Animation, Music, and Art. His work focuses around the exaggeration of features, textures, and the flow of movement along with his music compositions, which are uniquely created with a similar inspiration based around freestyle and improvisation.

About The Clip

‘Not A Loner’ is a short that takes place in a park, cinema and club capturing the idea of being alone in a typically social environment and the perception from the others around is that the lone person is a loner in need of someones ‘help’ in the form of company. The people that are following the main character are not aware that he is uncomfortable around them and wants that alone time.

Although the visual stands on its own, the sound really leads all the movements throughout. As a Music Producer/Composer, I used minimalistic sounds and rhythms, solidifying the Low-Poly & drawn aesthetic in the animation. The changes of environments are reinforced with sound effects (such as reverb) to adapt to each environment and create that sense of depth. The character styles have a touch of inspiration from African Sculptures along with using a mixture of my recorded vocal samples & a synth similar to some African instruments such as a Kalimba/Xylophone. The clips flow together as one short, but each clip captures a subtle emotional interaction between the characters inside their spaces. Each Clip has its own feel, merging African rhythms and melodies almost reminiscent of various mobile technology sounds.

What came to mind when GIPHY Arts approached you for a commission?

It was such a pleasant surprise to see. Last year I joined GIPHY Arts with the aim of gaining opportunities such as this! It was nice to see that my work was being viewed by many, but being approached for a funded commission by GIPHY Arts gave me a sense of reassurance with sharing my work on that platform and format. Especially with Clips (which includes audio), it gave me the opportunity to explore the interconnection between looped audio and visual shorts.

What is different about GIFs/Clips vs. other art mediums?

The essence of the GIF and Clip is that it can loop. You can watch multiple sequences on the same screen with no delays. I would say it’s pretty much visual music with expression of emotions at its core. Everything is created for repetition. Although it might be 1 or 2 seconds, it could have a purpose to be repeated 20 + times.

What do you hope your audience takes away from your work?

I want them to feel a sense of passion, imagination, and inspiration from seeing things either sound, interact, look or move in peculiar ways. Through the mixture of sounds, music, and visuals, I aim to pull the audience out of their frame and to explore a new feeling or emotion that can’t easily be labeled.
