GIPHY Arts Talk Shop: Relatable Nostalgia with Artist Morris Callegari
GIPHY Arts commissions hundreds of artists a year, all of whom do impeccable work. Today, we are happy to spotlight GIPHY Artist Morris Callegari and share a Q&A that dives deeper into the creative process.
Morris is a 3D artist based out of Berkeley, California. He loves telling stories of nostalgia and his childhood to illustrate things that people can relate to (hopefully).
What came to mind when GIPHY Arts approached you for a commission?
I was excited for the opportunity, but I also freaked out a bit. My process usually takes a long time so having a month to finish was intimidating. But gladly I figured it out and I’m super excited to create more clips in the future!
What is different about GIFs/Clips vs. other art mediums?
To be honest, I enjoy the medium of short form animation more than any other medium I’ve tried so far. It varies so much! You can do what I did and make a short story or you can make a whacky animation intended for texting with friends. A lot of other mediums aren’t nearly as flexible in usage.
What do you hope your audience takes away from your work?
I hope people are able to connect with it in some way. I know that’s vague, but after creating my first short film, Elsewhere, people who saw it paid attention to so many things that I didn’t intend them to. It made me realize that it’s awesome to hear the different interpretations rather than be rigid about the meaning behind your own work.
Describe yourself with one GIF/Clip
I have a perfectly working notebook but I opt to put my notes on post-its and stick them everywhere instead.
