GIPHY Arts commissions hundreds of artists a year, all of whom do impeccable work. Today, we are happy to spotlight GIPHY Artist Gisselle Yepes (They/Them) and share a Q&A that dives deeper into the creative process.
Gisselle Yepes is a Puerto Rican and Colombian poet and storyteller from the Bronx. They love sharing stories of the Caribbean and extensions of/from the Caribbean, like ones that exist in the Bronx, in bodegas, with our grandmothers, and our homes.
What came to mind when GIPHY Arts approached you for a commission?
Cuando Wela terminó de cantar la última vez que la escuché cantando, ella dijo: “EYA”. Hay un clip de ella en mi canal de Giphy de su “EYA”, de su canción terminando. “EYA” es lo que me vino a la mente cuando Katherine también me envió un mensaje pa la comisión.
Antes de decir “EYA” en enero, cantó deseando cumplir 83 años en febrero y creía que cumpliría 83 años. Cumplió 83, mientras estaba viva. Es la misma certeza que sentí cuando Katherine, cuando GIPHY, se acercó a mí, como si supieran que yo también podía contar historias con película.
What is different about GIFs/Clips vs. other art mediums?
Comparó con la escritura, por ejemplo, GIF / Clips revelan movimiento e imágenes en un lenguaje que no necesitamos escribir y en cambio, estamos creando / curando con tomas, películas, nuestra narración y nuestras aguas.
What do you hope your audience takes away from your work?
Que nuestro vivir, las personas que se sienten comprendides al ver, escuchar o leer mis narraciones, que se sienten que son, porque son, importantes. Nuestro vivir importa lo suficiente para ser contaó, compartió y aveces convertió en arte. Comparten sus historias; hay gente, hay amor, al otro laó escuchándote cantar.
