This month, Latinx.GIF (GIPHY’s Diversity & Inclusion ERG Latinx Chapter), celebrated Latinx Heritage Month by hosting a series of events including a panel featuring Steven Canals and a reprisal of our virtual variety hour GIPHY GIGANTE. In addition to these live events, the chapter had some passive programming called La Canción del Día as a means to explore Latinx heritage through music. It consisted of a daily Slack post of a chosen artist and song along with some context meant to be a conversation starter. On the content side, GIPHY’s Content Team worked with partners and artists to ensure GIPHY had amazing content all month long.

For Latinx Heritage Month, Latinx.GIF had a thoughtful conversation with Steven Canals, co-creator of the Emmy nominated television series Pose, in which he also worked as a writer and director. The talk covered many things, including Steven’s upbringing and influences, challenges in representing Latinidad, as well as celebrating the achievements of Pose and its depictions of grounded, multi-dimensional, realistic characters. One standout moment was when Steven recalled pitching Pose in over 160 meetings before finally getting the green light to create the show, which was a sobering but inspiring message of perseverance.
GIPHY GIGANTE was born in 2020 out of necessity to have a virtual event as a way to celebrate LHM while educating and entertaining people. This year’s version featured comedy skits, live cocktail making, quiz games and Latinx film recommendations. Of particular note was a segment satirizing the community discourse around the name of Latinx Heritage Month, meant to educate and summarize to viewers about the different perspectives and stances around the name and its alternatives.
Additionally, Creator’s Club partnered with Asif.TV to create amazing Clips to celebrate LHM.
