Make Video Calls More Animated with GIPHY Backdrop

GIPHY has always powered formats that make communication more expressive — and now more than ever before, so many of those conversations are happening in virtual hangouts like Zoom. To help users bring some personality and fun into those meetings, we are launching GIPHY Backdrop — a creation tool for animated virtual backgrounds.

It started a few months ago when we brought our users some custom GIPHY-made backgrounds for video calls. As we began experimenting with different background types, we realized we needed to empower our users to make their own creations. Now, with GIPHY Backdrop, users can do just that!

Getting started is easy — just go to In addition to being a destination where you can find a variety of Virtual Backgrounds, you can choose from a wide array of pre-made starter backgrounds (created by GIPHY partners and artists, such as Loulou João, J.B.Kinard, Alex Phillip, Kiernan Sjursen-Lien, and Sarah Zucker!), accessorize it with animated stickers, captions, filters, drawings, etc… and voila! You now have your own custom GIPHY-inspired background to impress your friends and colleagues.

In addition, we are excited to have some exclusive launch content from Into Action (an activism awareness initiative) and Illumination (the studio who brought us the Minions, Sing, The Secret Life of Pets, and many other hit animated films).

Want something more custom? You can also upload your own video or image and customize from there. Want to share your background with others? Easy. Each background will have a custom link so you can send to whoever you’d like.

See below for a tutorial on how GIPHY Backdrop works:

With so many people, families and companies still in remote-mode, we hope this adds some creativity and a bit of fun to the everyday video conference.
