The Top VMA 2017 Moments on GIPHY

Another year, another VMAs spectacular. Team GIPHY always enjoys the over the top madness that is the VMAs — in fact, we always said that it was our Super Bowl. (That was before we started live GIFing the ACTUAL Super Bowl.) But it’s still one of our favorite events of the year…and judging by the huge view counts on the official VMAs GIPHY channel, it appears a lot of you enjoyed the the show as well. There were over 167 million views on VMA GIFs over the past 24 hours!

In case you missed it, GIPHY just launched view counts for Partner and Artists GIFs, and the VMA’s is a perfect example of being able to see what audiences loved about 2017’s broadcast.

But what moments were driving all those views? Let’s take a closer look at the biggest GIFs of the night:

Katy Perry! Unsurprisingly, this year’s host is the current owner of the most viewed GIF of the night (at least, so far). This GIF from her VMA sketch has already seen over 19MM views in the last 24 hours.

Positive Messages! Amid all the flashy performances, the real star of the night were the heartfelt social messages. From Jared Leto’s tribute to his friend Chester Bennington to Susan Bro’s call to action against racism, the positive messages spread throughout social media. This powerful GIF of Kesha was shared by MTV and Teen Vogue, and was retweeted thousands of times.

Pink’s Performance! Not many people can ride a flying car, drive a lawn mower, AND give a sincere, tearjerking speech — but Pink managed to do all that and more. Her Video Vanguard performance spawned plenty of GIF worthy moments, including this amazing moment between mother and daughter.

Taylor Swift’s “Look What You Made Me Do” Music Video! Do you want to be excluded from this narrative? Too bad, because these GIFs are going to be everywhere for the next few months and shared by Swifties for years to come.

Cardi B — Reaction Queen! The undisputed Reaction GIF champion of last night was Cardi B. From her free flowing pre-show interview, to her now classic look to the camera, you’re going to be seeing a LOT of Cardi B on your timeline today. Cardi — call us and let’s make some Reaction GIFs at GIPHY Studios!

Lorde’s Dancing! Lorde’s cold was GIF gold. Unable to sing due to a sickness, Lorde took to the stage with a bizarre, passionate dance routine instead. Whether you were delighted by it or bewildered by it, you have to admit that the dance moves were perfect for the GIF medium.
